Emily Green Shores is a faith-based senior assisted living facility owned by the Portsmouth Baptist Association and located in Portsmouth, Virginia. Our facility rests on the Elizabeth River waterfront offering beautiful sunset views from our spacious sunroom facing the water. Emily Green Shores is much like home; a comfortable family setting where you can read a book in the living room, enjoy watching the boats on the waterfront from the porch, play cards after supper with your neighbors, and know that each day will be filled with caring hands and friendly, familiar faces.
Emily Green Shores began in 1913 in Court Street Baptist Church as a meeting organized by five Portsmouth women who recognized the need of senior adult women to have a comfortable secure place to call "home". On June 17, 1915, the Home opened on Emmett Street in a residence formerly occupied as a hospital. For more than 30 years the late Mrs. Emily Green served as Chairman of the Board and after her death, the Home was renamed in her honor. In 1962, residents moved from the former location into the modern, brick residence on the riverfront at 500 Westmoreland Terrace, donated by the late Jerome Carr.
In 1967, the Portsmouth Baptist Association assumed management of the Home and operation was continued on a non-denominational basis. In 1969, construction was initiated and with the addition of a new wing it eventually became the structure that is presently Emily Green Shores Retirement Home. On July 10, 1978, the Board of Directors voted to accept men and married couples to Emily Green Shores and to offer them the same opportunity to live in a secure and family-like environment.
Our assisted living residency is an ambulatory-only facility meaning our residents have the means to be able to move about on their own (non-wheelchair bound) and reasonably facilitate their own activities of daily living.
Our mission is to see that our residents, their families, guardians, our employees, and business associates are treated with honesty, integrity, and dignity.
We are a member of the Virginia Association of Non-Profit Homes for the Aging
Activity programs are planned and prepared each month. Our monthly program calendar has activities that are designed to promote social involvement by our residents on many different levels.
